How can :Data help you get medical treatment tailored to you?

Outline

Outline
One of the most sensitive data which needs extra caution is personal medical data such as the history of illnesses, treatments, etc.
However, if a patient is able to carry around one's personal medical data or such data becomes accessible across hospitals, we can expect to see improvement in the efficiency and quality of diagnosis and treatment.
We can also improve medical care in remote locations by using sensors which will allow families and primary doctors to constantly monitor the patient from a distance and act swiftly in emergencies.
Also, when we accumulate medical data anonymously as big data, it can benefit the progress of medical research, development of new drugs, as well as improvement in social welfare and hygiene.

Pros

Pros
  • Safe flexible transfer of personal medical data across medical institutions will allow for a swift diagnosis.
  • Real-time acquisition of physical data using sensors will help with early and preventive care and treatment.
  • Non-identifying medical “big data” will help with welfare policies, medical research, and development of new drugs.

Challenge

Challenge
  • Personal medical data is considered highly sensitive with implications on not only the patient but also the patient's family. Therefore, handling of such data must be strictly regulated to avoid any breach of privacy.
  • Also, the data must be handled based on the owner's consent.
  • There must be two sets of rules and procedures in place for handling the two types of data: personal data which specifies an individual and collective data which does not(medical big data).
  • Again, data in medicine is merely one of the factors to support any medical decision. Relying solely on data for diagnosis will not only inhibit the comprehensive observation which a patient requires and invite the risk of missing an important symptom.
